Pr\u00ed\u010dinou po\u0161kodenia tepeln\u00e9ho \u0161t\u00edtu bol kus izola\u010dnej peny, ktor\u00fd odpadol z externej palivovej n\u00e1dr\u017ee po\u010das \u0161tartu raketopl\u00e1nu. B\u00fdval\u00fd testovac\u00ed pilot sa astronautom stal a\u017e na \u0161tvrt\u00fd pokus v roku 1994. Nalietal viac ne\u017e 3\u00a0800 hod\u00edn so 40 r\u00f4znymi druhmi lietadiel. Sl\u00fa\u017eil ako pilot-in\u0161truktor.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>William C. McCool<\/strong> (pilot) \u2013 \u0161tyridsa\u0165jedenro\u010dn\u00fd pilot naroden\u00fd v San Diegu (\u0161t\u00e1t Kalifornia). V Texase absolvoval v roku 1983 ako druh\u00fd najlep\u0161\u00ed \u0161tudent svojej triedy n\u00e1morn\u00fa akad\u00e9miu. Bol americk\u00fd n\u00e1morn\u00fd velite\u013e, v roku 1986 za\u010dal svoju kari\u00e9ru pilota lietan\u00edm s Navy. Pilotoval 24 r\u00f4znych druhov lietadiel vr\u00e1tane EA-6B Prowler. V roku 1992 sa stal sk\u00fa\u0161obn\u00fdm pilotom a v roku 1996 astronautom. Bol to jeho v\u00f4bec prv\u00fd let.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>David M. Brown<\/strong> (prv\u00fd letov\u00fd \u0161pecialista) \u2013 \u0161tyridsa\u0165\u0161es\u0165ro\u010dn\u00fd pilot a lek\u00e1r naroden\u00fd v Alingtone vo Virg\u00ednii. V roku 1990 sa stal n\u00e1morn\u00fdm pilotom, nalietal celkove 1 700 hod\u00edn. Stal sa prv\u00fdm lek\u00e1rom po desiatich rokoch, ktor\u00fd bol v n\u00e1morn\u00edctve vybran\u00fd do pilotn\u00e9ho v\u00fdcviku. Pre neho to bol prv\u00fd let do vesm\u00edru.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Kalpana Chawlaov\u00e1<\/strong> (druh\u00fd letov\u00fd \u0161pecialista) \u2013 \u0161tyridsa\u0165jedenro\u010dn\u00e1 Indka, ktor\u00e1 do USA emigrovala v roku 1980, nebola vo vesm\u00edre \u017eiadnym nov\u00e1\u010dikom. Astronautkou sa stala v roku 1994. Pri lete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adhara.sk\/?page_id=8814\">STS-87<\/a> v roku 1996 zavinila chybu, ktor\u00e1 sp\u00f4sobila uvo\u013enenie vedeck\u00e9ho satelitu. Ostatn\u00ed \u010dlenovia pos\u00e1dky potom museli vyst\u00fapi\u0165 do vesm\u00edrneho priestoru a zachyti\u0165 ho.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Michael P. Anderson<\/strong> (tret\u00ed letov\u00fd \u0161pecialista \u2013 velite\u013e u\u017eito\u010dn\u00e9ho za\u0165a\u017eenia) \u2013 \u0161tyridsa\u0165triro\u010dn\u00fd podplukovn\u00edk zodpovedn\u00fd za vedeck\u00e9 experimenty. Narodil sa v Plattsburghu v \u0161t\u00e1te New York. Na Creighton univerzity v Omahe z\u00edskal magistersk\u00fd titul. Vojensk\u00fd pilot, nalietal 3\u00a0000 hod\u00edn a stal sa tie\u017e pilotom-in\u0161truktorom. NASA ho vybrala v roku 1994 ako jedn\u00e9ho z m\u00e1la astronautov tmavej farby pleti. U\u017e raz letel do vesm\u00edru ako \u010dlen pos\u00e1dky misie STS-89.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Laurel B. Clarkov\u00e1<\/strong> (\u0161tvrt\u00fd letov\u00fd \u0161pecialista) \u2013 \u0161tyridsa\u0165jedenro\u010dn\u00e1 lek\u00e1rka s praxou na ponork\u00e1ch sa stala astronautkou v roku 1996. Na palube Columbie asistovala pri vedeck\u00fdch experimentoch.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ilan Ramon<\/strong> (\u0161pecialista pre u\u017eito\u010dn\u00e9 za\u0165a\u017eenie) \u2013 \u0161tyridsa\u0165osemro\u010dn\u00fd plukovn\u00edk izraelsk\u00e9ho letectva a prv\u00fd Izrael\u010dan vo vesm\u00edre. Jeho matka a babi\u010dka pre\u017eili Osvien\u010dim. Ramon bojoval v dvoch vojn\u00e1ch a z\u00fa\u010dastnil sa n\u00e1letu na irack\u00fd jadrov\u00fd reaktor Ossirak za\u010diatkom 80. rokov. Po\u010das nasleduj\u00facich 9 rokov z\u00edskal prax v lietan\u00ed s A-4 Skyhawk, F-16 a Mirage III-C a tie\u017e absolvoval tr\u00e9ning v Hill Air Force Base v Utahu. Mal tvar p\u00f4dorysu kozmick\u00e9ho raketopl\u00e1nu, pri\u010dom v jeho strede bolo ozna\u010denie mikrogravit\u00e1cie (bezv\u00e1hov\u00e9ho stavu) &#8211; \u03bcg. Ten smerom nahor prech\u00e1dzal do symbolu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adhara.sk\/?page_id=7410\">astronautov<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adhara.sk\/?page_id=708\">hviezdy<\/a> s troma pruhmi obopnut\u00fdmi kruhom. Na pravej strane je symbolicky zn\u00e1zornen\u00e1 Zem, nad ktorou vych\u00e1dza <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adhara.sk\/?page_id=2887\">Slnko<\/a>. V\u00fdchod Slnka symbolizuje \u00fasvit novej \u00e9ry mikrogravita\u010dn\u00e9ho v\u00fdskumu. Povrch Zeme zviera so znakom astronautov uhol 39\u00b0, lebo Columbia obiehala Zem po dr\u00e1he so sklonom 39\u00b0 k rovn\u00edku. Na \u013eavej strane je s\u00fahvezdie Holubica (po latinsky Columba). Jeho sedem hviezd symbolizuje sedem astronautov, cel\u00e9 s\u00fahvezdie z\u00e1rove\u0148 symbolizuje mier na Zemi. Po obvode embl\u00e9mu s\u00fa men\u00e1 \u010dlenov pos\u00e1dky a pri mene Ilana Ramona je navy\u0161e mal\u00e1 vlajka \u0161t\u00e1tu Izrael.<\/p>\n<h2>Cie\u013e letu<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cie\u013eom letu boli predov\u0161etk\u00fdm vedeck\u00e9 biologick\u00e9 experimenty v mikrogravit\u00e1cii. D\u00f4raz sa kl\u00e1dol na lek\u00e1rske experimenty, ale realizovan\u00e9 boli aj pokusy z oblasti technologick\u00e9ho a materi\u00e1lov\u00e9ho v\u00fdskumu. V n\u00e1kladovom priestore raketopl\u00e1nu sa nach\u00e1dzalo laborat\u00f3rium Spacehab, model RDM (Double Research Module &#8211; doslova dvojit\u00fd v\u00fdskumn\u00fd modul) sl\u00fa\u017eiace na experimenty v mikrogravit\u00e1cii a extern\u00e1 pr\u00edstrojov\u00e1 plo\u0161ina FREESTAR (Fast Reaction Experiments Enabling Science Technology Applications and Research).<\/p>\n<h2>Probl\u00e9my pred \u0161tartom<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">STS-107 bola jedin\u00e1 vedeck\u00e1 misia, ktor\u00e1 \u201epre\u017eila\u201c \u0161krty v rozpo\u010dte NASA. P\u00f4vodn\u00e9 pl\u00e1ny toti\u017e hovorili o jednej vedeckej misii ka\u017ed\u00fd rok od roku 2001. Postupn\u00fdm zni\u017eovan\u00edm rozpo\u010dtu v\u0161ak z cel\u00e9ho pl\u00e1novan\u00e9ho radu misi\u00ed zostala len misia Columbia STS-107. Aj t\u00e1 v\u0161ak bola postupne odkladan\u00e1, preto\u017ee prednos\u0165 malo z\u00e1sobovanie a v\u00fdmena pos\u00e1dok <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adhara.sk\/?page_id=8697\">ISS<\/a>. Do hry vst\u00fapili aj technick\u00e9 probl\u00e9my. Columbia u\u017e od roku 1999 prech\u00e1dzala rozsiahlou \u00fapravou (Orbiter Maintenance Down Period), ktor\u00e1 zah\u0155\u0148ala d\u00f4kladn\u00fa \u00fadr\u017ebu, kontrolu a moderniz\u00e1ciu raketopl\u00e1nu. T\u00e1to kontrola sa v\u0161ak pred\u013a\u017eila a tak sa prv\u00fd term\u00edn \u0161tartu (11. janu\u00e1r 2001) stal nere\u00e1lnym. Po\u010das nasleduj\u00facich dvoch rokov do\u0161lo k 13 \u010fal\u0161\u00edm odkladom. Ke\u010f bol raketopl\u00e1n kone\u010dne v letuschopnom stave, bolo prijat\u00e9 rozhodnutie, \u017ee najprv sa uskuto\u010dn\u00ed misia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adhara.sk\/?page_id=3848\">STS-109<\/a> &#8211; servisn\u00e1 misia k <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adhara.sk\/?page_id=4742\">Hubblovmu vesm\u00edrnemu \u010falekoh\u013eadu<\/a>. \u0160tart misie STS-107 bol pl\u00e1novan\u00fd na j\u00fal 2002, ale z d\u00f4vodu \u010fal\u0161\u00edch technick\u00fdch probl\u00e9mov bol op\u00e4\u0165 odlo\u017een\u00fd.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lety raketopl\u00e1nov nie s\u00fa ozna\u010dovan\u00e9 pod\u013ea poradia, v akom \u0161tartuj\u00fa, ale pod\u013ea poradia, v akom boli napl\u00e1novan\u00e9. Poradie ich \u0161tartu sa m\u00f4\u017ee meni\u0165 z finan\u010dn\u00fdch, technick\u00fdch a in\u00fdch d\u00f4vodov. Tam bola do jej n\u00e1kladov\u00e9ho priestoru vlo\u017een\u00e1 najprv pr\u00edstrojov\u00e1 paleta EDO (25. apr\u00edla 2002). 6. j\u00fana ju nasledovali Spacehab a FREESTAR a 31. okt\u00f3bra boli dvere do n\u00e1kladov\u00e9ho priestoru orbitera uzavret\u00e9. 18. novembra 2002 bola Columbia presunut\u00e1 do mont\u00e1\u017enej haly VAB, kde bola o dva dni nesk\u00f4r pripojen\u00e1 k hlavnej palivovej n\u00e1dr\u017ei ET a pomocn\u00fdm motorom SRB. 9. decembra 2002 sa za\u010dala premiest\u0148ova\u0165 na odpa\u013eovaciu rampu 39-A. Odpo\u010d\u00edtavanie bolo zah\u00e1jen\u00e9 13. janu\u00e1ra 2003 v stave T-43 hod\u00edn. Pr\u00edpravu na \u0161tart a samotn\u00fd \u0161tart sprev\u00e1dzali zvl\u00e1\u0161tne bezpe\u010dnostn\u00e9 opatrenia, hlavne kv\u00f4li pr\u00edtomnosti izraelsk\u00e9ho astronauta na palube. 7 hod\u00edn 20 min\u00fat pred \u0161tartom za\u010dal pozemn\u00fd person\u00e1l plni\u0165 n\u00e1dr\u017e ET pohonn\u00fdmi hmotami. Pos\u00e1dka za\u010dala do orbitera nastupova\u0165 o 8:30 UT. Prv\u00fd nast\u00fapil velite\u013e Rick Husband, posledn\u00e1 (v \u010dase 13:45) Kalpana Chawlaov\u00e1. Vstupn\u00fd prielez bol uzavret\u00fd o 14:17.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u0160tart prebehol \u00faspe\u0161ne vo \u0161tvrtok 16. janu\u00e1ra 2003 o 15:39:00 UT. I\u0161lo celkove o 113. \u0161tart v <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adhara.sk\/?page_id=403\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">programe Space Shuttle<\/a> a celkove tret\u00ed kozmick\u00fd \u0161tart v roku 2003. V \u010dase 15:40:21 UT dia\u013ekov\u00e9 kamery zistili odtrhnutie \u010dasti tepelnej izol\u00e1cie n\u00e1dr\u017ee ET a jeho z\u00e1sah do \u013eav\u00e9ho kr\u00eddla orbitera. R\u00fdchlos\u0165 kol\u00edzie bola vypo\u010d\u00edtan\u00e1 na 190\u00a0m\/s, hmotnos\u0165 \u00falomku na 1,2\u00a0kg. Pod\u013ea vtedaj\u0161ieho \u00fasudku technikov to nemohlo sp\u00f4sobi\u0165 v\u00e1\u017enej\u0161ie po\u0161kodenie kr\u00eddla ani jeho tepelnej ochrany. Pr\u00e1ve tento n\u00e1raz \u00falomku izola\u010dnej peny do kr\u00eddla sa v\u0161ak stal raketopl\u00e1nu osudn\u00fdm. \u0160tart pokra\u010doval \u010falej bez probl\u00e9mov. 2 min\u00faty a 7 sek\u00fand po \u0161tarte sa od n\u00e1dr\u017ee ET oddelili pomocn\u00e9 motory SRB a prist\u00e1li v Atlantickom oce\u00e1ne. O 15:47:30 UT boli vypnut\u00e9 hlavn\u00e9 motory SSME (Space Shuttle Main Engines), a o 16:23 UT bol raketopl\u00e1n Columbia naveden\u00fd na opera\u010dn\u00fa obe\u017en\u00fa dr\u00e1hu dvojmin\u00fatov\u00fdm z\u00e1\u017eihom motorov OMS (Orbital Maneuvering System).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Po dosiahnut\u00ed obe\u017enej dr\u00e1hy misia dostala medzin\u00e1rodn\u00e9 ozna\u010denie 2003-003A. Columbia sa dostala na obe\u017en\u00fa dr\u00e1hu 273\u00a0\u2013\u00a0290\u00a0km a jeden obeh okolo Zeme jej trval 90,14 min\u00fat. Sklon dr\u00e1hy Columbie k rovn\u00edku bol 39\u00b0. Dve hodiny po \u0161tarte boli otvoren\u00e9 dvere do n\u00e1kladov\u00e9ho priestoru a o \u010fal\u0161iu hodinu bolo zah\u00e1jen\u00e9 o\u017eivovanie Spacehabu a aktiv\u00e1cia s\u00fapravy EDO. Druh\u00fdm probl\u00e9mom bol skrat na jednom z dvojice separ\u00e1torov kondenzovanej vody, ku ktor\u00e9mu do\u0161lo nasleduj\u00faceho d\u0148a. Z tohto d\u00f4vodu muselo by\u0165 obmedzen\u00e9 chladenie vzduchu, aby bolo mo\u017en\u00e9 udr\u017eiava\u0165 na prijate\u013enej \u00farovni chladenie elektroniky. T\u00fdm v\u0161ak za\u010dala st\u00fapa\u0165 teplota na palube Spacehabu. Obidva probl\u00e9my sa v\u0161ak pos\u00e1dke podarilo \u00faspe\u0161ne odstr\u00e1ni\u0165. V priebehu letu sa uskuto\u010dnili celkove \u0161tyri tla\u010dov\u00e9 konferencie. T\u00e1 hlavn\u00e1 za \u00fa\u010dasti v\u0161etk\u00fdch \u010dlenov pos\u00e1dky prebehla 29. janu\u00e1ra. Najv\u00e4\u010d\u0161iu pozornos\u0165 na palube p\u00fatal prv\u00fd izraelsk\u00fd astronaut Ilan Ramon, kv\u00f4li ktor\u00e9mu sa uskuto\u010dnila samostatn\u00e1 tla\u010dov\u00e1 konferencia 20. janu\u00e1ra. Ramonov brat po hav\u00e1rii povedal: \u201cHovoril, \u017ee je tak\u00fd \u0161\u0165astn\u00fd, \u017ee sa ani nechce vr\u00e1ti\u0165 sp\u00e4\u0165 na Zem\u2026 a nevr\u00e1til sa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Zauj\u00edmavos\u0165ou je kresba \u0161trn\u00e1s\u0165ro\u010dn\u00e9ho chlapca Petra Ginza, ktor\u00fa si so sebou do vesm\u00edru vzal Ilan Ramon. Okrem toho mal Ramon so sebou napr. t\u00f3ru, \u017eidovsk\u00fd n\u00e1bo\u017eensk\u00fd text, ktor\u00fd pre\u0161iel nemeck\u00fdm koncentra\u010dn\u00fdm t\u00e1borom a \u201eko\u0161er\u201c potraviny \u0161peci\u00e1lne balen\u00e9 pre pou\u017eitie vo vesm\u00edre.<\/p>\n<h4>Pr\u00edstrojov\u00e9 vybavenie a experimenty<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ako u\u017e bolo spom\u00ednan\u00e9, STS-107 bola vedeck\u00e1 misia. V n\u00e1kladovom priestore raketopl\u00e1nu sa nach\u00e1dzalo laborat\u00f3rium Spacehab sl\u00fa\u017eiace na experimenty v mikrogravit\u00e1cii. Ozna\u010denie dvojit\u00fd v\u00fdskumn\u00fd modul (DRM) znamen\u00e1, \u017ee tento exempl\u00e1r vznikol spojen\u00edm dvoch men\u0161\u00edch modulov do jedn\u00e9ho v\u00e4\u010d\u0161ieho. Spacehab a orbiter sp\u00e1jal \u0161es\u0165metrov\u00fd tunel, na ktor\u00fd bola napojen\u00e1 tie\u017e komora EAL (External Airlock) pre v\u00fdstup do otvoren\u00e9ho priestoru. V prechodovej komore boli dva skafandre a p\u00fatacie lan\u00e1, napriek tomu, \u017ee nebol pl\u00e1novan\u00fd a ani neprebehol nijak\u00fd v\u00fdstup do otvoren\u00e9ho priestoru. Vesm\u00edrne laborat\u00f3rium Spacehab malo tvar le\u017eat\u00e9ho zrezan\u00e9ho valca s d\u013a\u017ekou 6 metrov a vn\u00fatorn\u00fdm objemom objem 60\u00a0m\u00b3. Na palube Spacehabu bolo umiestnen\u00fdch 3375 kilogramov n\u00e1kladu (pr\u00edstroje, vzorky, manu\u00e1ly\u2026) a \u010fal\u0161\u00edch 360\u00a0kg sa nach\u00e1dzalo na obytnej palube orbitera. Projekt v\u0161ak bol pozastaven\u00e1 a n\u00e1sledne zru\u0161en\u00fd z d\u00f4vodu nezh\u00f4d medzi Kongresom a Bielym domom.<\/p>\n<h4>Biologick\u00e9 experimenty<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Na palube Columbie boli tie\u017e sklen\u00edky, akv\u00e1ri\u00e1 a ter\u00e1ri\u00e1, aby sa mohlo \u0161tudova\u0165 vplyv mikrogravit\u00e1cie na \u017eiv\u00e9 organizmy. Zop\u00e1r t\u00fdchto \u017eivo\u010d\u00edchov dokonca hav\u00e1riu pre\u017eilo. I\u0161lo o \u010dervy <em>Caenorhabditis elegans<\/em>. \u010eal\u0161ie organizmy, ktor\u00e9 pre\u017eili v kanistry p\u00e1d r\u00fdchlos\u0165ou a\u017e 9\u00a0700\u00a0km\/h pri teplot\u00e1ch dosahuj\u00facich 175\u00a0\u00b0C, boli bakt\u00e9rie kme\u0148a <em>Microbispora<\/em>. Tieto mikroorganizmy s\u00edce neboli s\u00fa\u010das\u0165ou experimentov (tri experiment\u00e1lne kmene hav\u00e1riu nepre\u017eili), ale dostali sa do kanistra zrejme e\u0161te pred \u0161tartom. Tieto objavy podporili mo\u017enos\u0165, \u017ee niektor\u00e9 organizmy dok\u00e1\u017eu pre\u017ei\u0165 prelet zemskou atmosf\u00e9rou a n\u00e1sledn\u00fd dopad. Mus\u00edme pokra\u010dova\u0165.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Lek\u00e1rske experimenty<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">D\u00f4raz sa kl\u00e1dol na lek\u00e1rske experimenty, pri\u010dom astronauti sl\u00fa\u017eili nielen ako v\u00fdskumn\u00edci, ale aj ako pokusn\u00e9 objekty. Raketopl\u00e1n bol oto\u010den\u00fd motormi dopredu a o 14: 15: 30 bol preveden\u00fd stop\u00e4\u0165desiatosemsekundov\u00fd z\u00e1\u017eih motorov OME (Orbital Maneuvering Engine &#8211; motor pre man\u00e9vrovanie na obe\u017enej dr\u00e1he). Potom piloti oto\u010dili Columbiu sp\u00e4\u0165 do p\u00f4vodnej polohy, \u010di\u017ee &#8222;nosom&#8220; dopredu. Z blokov FRCS (Foward Reaction Control System, doslova predn\u00fd reakt\u00edvny kontroln\u00fd syst\u00e9m &#8211; skupina motorov RCS umiestnen\u00fdch v prednej \u010dasti raketopl\u00e1nu) boli vypusten\u00e9 zvy\u0161ky pohonn\u00fdch hm\u00f4t. Raketopl\u00e1n vst\u00fapil do vrchn\u00fdch vrstiev atmosf\u00e9ry, kde ho za\u010dala postupne obklopova\u0165 \u017eerav\u00e1 plazma. T\u00e1to plazma s teplotou presahuj\u00facou 1000\u00a0\u00b0C vznik\u00e1 tren\u00edm riedkych vrstiev vzduchu o povrch raketopl\u00e1nu. Raketopl\u00e1n (presnej\u0161ie orbiter) je v\u0161ak proti nej chr\u00e1nen\u00fd vrstvou izola\u010dn\u00fdch do\u0161ti\u010diek. Za ofici\u00e1lny \u010das vstupu do atmosf\u00e9ry sa pova\u017euje \u010das 14:44 SE\u010c. Zatia\u013e v\u0161etko prebiehalo pod\u013ea pl\u00e1nu. S dosadnut\u00edm stroja na prist\u00e1vaciu dr\u00e1hu Kennedyho kozmick\u00e9ho strediska sa po\u010d\u00edtalo o 15:16 SE\u010c.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">O 14:49 Columbia zah\u00e1jila pravoto\u010div\u00fa ot\u00e1\u010dku &#8211; man\u00e9ver na zn\u00ed\u017eenie r\u00fdchlosti. V \u010dase 14:49 nieko\u013eko sn\u00edma\u010dov zaregistrovalo slab\u00fd n\u00e1rast teploty. O 14:52 zaregistrovali mierny n\u00e1rast teploty aj sn\u00edma\u010de v hydraulickom syst\u00e9me b\u0155zd \u013eav\u00e9ho podvozku. V nasleduj\u00facich chv\u00ed\u013each do\u0161lo k strate \u00fadajov zo sn\u00edma\u010dov. Teplota r\u00e1stla v celom kr\u00eddle a v celej podvozkovej \u0161achte. Tieto \u00fadaje riadiace stredisko zaregistrovalo, ale nevenovalo im zvl\u00e1\u0161tnu pozornos\u0165. Potom do\u0161lo k strate \u00fadajov o tlaku aj v pneumatik\u00e1ch \u013eav\u00e9ho podvozku. T\u00fato skuto\u010dnos\u0165 u\u017e mohla znamena\u0165 v\u00e1\u017enu poruchu, st\u00e1le v\u0161ak mohlo \u00eds\u0165 len o poruchu komunik\u00e1cie. Riadiace stredisko si to v\u0161ak chcelo overi\u0165: \u201eColumbia, tu je Houston\u201c, povedal capcom riadiaceho strediska Charles Hobaugh, \u201epozer\u00e1me sa tu na hodnoty tlaku v pneumatik\u00e1ch a posledn\u00e9 sme nedostali.\u201c \u201eRozumiem&#8230;\u201c stihol e\u0161te poveda\u0165 velite\u013e Rick Husband a vyslovil e\u0161te za\u010diatok \u010fal\u0161ieho slova. Ak\u00e9ho, to sa u\u017e nikto nikdy nedozvedel, preto\u017ee v tej chv\u00edli bolo s raketopl\u00e1nom preru\u0161en\u00e9 v\u0161etko spojenie. O nieko\u013eko sek\u00fand sa stroj pod\u013ea radarov\u00fdch hl\u00e1sen\u00ed rozpadol. Tesne pred rozpadom do\u0161lo k odtrhnutiu \u013eav\u00e9ho kr\u00eddla. V okamihu rozpadu sa Columbia nach\u00e1dzala vo v\u00fd\u0161ke 63 kilometrov a pohybovala sa r\u00fdchlos\u0165ou 5,5\u00a0km\/s. V trase raketopl\u00e1nu na\u010falej leteli u\u017e len \u017eerav\u00e9 trosky, ktor\u00e9 sa rozpt\u00fdlili a dopadli na \u00fazemie troch americk\u00fdch \u0161t\u00e1tov, najviac v\u0161ak na Texas. Okam\u017eite sa rozbehli z\u00e1chrann\u00e9 akcie. K tomuto po\u0161kodeniu do\u0161lo e\u0161te pri \u0161tarte. Sp\u00f4sobil ho ve\u013ek\u00fd kus penovej izol\u00e1cie, ktor\u00fd odpadol z n\u00e1dr\u017ee ET a dopadol na n\u00e1be\u017en\u00fa hranu kr\u00eddla, kde po\u0161kodil panely RCC. Miesto dopadu bolo naozaj ne\u0161\u0165astn\u00e9 &#8211; keby tento kus dopadol na in\u00e9 miesto, pravdepodobne by sa aj napriek po\u0161kodeniu podarilo Columbii bezpe\u010dne prist\u00e1\u0165. Na n\u00e1be\u017enej hrane kr\u00eddla je v\u0161ak teplota plazmy najvy\u0161\u0161ia a celistvos\u0165 panelov RCC je pre bezpe\u010dn\u00e9 prist\u00e1tie nevyhnutn\u00e1. Vzniknutou trhlinou sa plazma dostala do kr\u00eddla, kde postupne prepa\u013eovala priehradky tvoriace jeho vn\u00fatorn\u00fa kon\u0161trukciu.
